3 Top NYC Chicken and Waffle Spots
I know, I know, I know. My readers are probably thinking, WTH!!!! I don’t normally do these types of posts, yeah I know. Yet, here it is, my favorite chicken and waffle spots since many of you ask me about restaurant/brunch recommendations.
With the summer in full swing, weekend brunch is just as much a sure thing as is the sun is shining. Brunch is a time to get out and about to spend quality time with friends and family, a way to have the perfect business meeting or just the right opportunity to try out a new place to eat.
When I Dont Do Clubs put out their 100 Black-Owned Restaurants and Bars in New York City and Brooklyn list, they gave every single one of us our complete brunch life and then some. This list hit the nail on the head and gave us dinner/brunch/hangout goals to conquer for the summer. Folks no longer had to wonder where to go but the conversation changed to which spot would we check off of our I Don’t Do Clubs list next.
As soon as I got wind of the list, I immediately went through it to scan some of the menus to prioritize my own agenda. It was through my initial scan that I recognized that I had already supported quite a few of the black-owned establishments and looked forward to covering some new territory. Over the last few years, chicken and waffles has become all the rave; particularly here in the NYC restaurant scene and continues to grow in its popularity.
Now I’m a self-proclaimed foodie and I love to try new things so it’s always interesting to me how each restaurant puts their own spin on the southern tradition. While I have had many chicken and waffles, some have definitely left a lasting impression on me. So without further ado:
#1 Suede Restaurant (Brooklyn)
Fried Chicken and Rum Raisin Waffle, omgeeeee!!!!! Those rum soaked raisins and that rum drizzle is so delicious that you want to just pick the darn waffle up and dip it in! You can also taste the Caribbean spices in the fried chicken; hands down my absolute favorite. Not to mention that new outside patio garden sets mood just right!
#2 Melba’s Restaurant (Harlem)
Fried Chicken and Eggnog Waffle, just because eggnog makes e-v-e-r-y-thing right! Eggnog is my guiltiest holiday season pleasure and to be able to get all year-long is alright with me. The chicken is nice and crispy and season to perfection without being salty.
#3 The Pink Tea Cup (Brooklyn)
Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Waffle, warms the soul. Sweet potato everything is just as delicious as they come. The old school brunch heads (like myself) went into serious mourning when the original Pink Tea Cup in the village closed down. So when this Brooklyn location opened, it was bound to be a favorite. The chicken is consistently yummy and well, like I said………that waffle speaks for itself.
Now tell the truth, have the I Don’t Do Clubs’ various lists become your Black Zagats (not just for millennials) guide? Do you love chicken and waffles like I do? Share some of your favorites!
……and if you haven’t already heard, I Don’t Do Clubs is introducing Black-Owned Restaurant Month in September 2015; don’t say I didn’t tell you!

Girl, I just knew Pink Teacup was going to be in this list. I had their grits, and my whole life changed. Thanks for letting me know that Suede has finally opened the outdoor space, I’ll have to check it out since it’s in the neighborhood. That list has become our go to for date nights and Sunday brunch!

So many great local options of deliciousness makes me the least bit interested in even leaving Brooklyn. The number of black-owned options is serious plus as well.
