Get In the Game!
I’m amazed, at how I continue to receive confirmation on this endeavor. As I multitask (prep for the school/work week, watch Black Girls Rock and type this post on election day information), my bell rings and it’s a door-to-door volunteer informing registered voters about Proposition 1 on this coming election day ballot. I am blessed to have a platform that I am able to be of service and to share any information that may be useful to someone else. Keep reading and most importantly, keep sharing as we grow together. All to often, we fail to Get In The Game, by not actively participating in the political process.
While as people of color we have made great strides in our voter participation over time, we continue to lag behind our counterparts. Despite aggressive voter registration and organizing efforts geared toward our community, we are not turning up to vote on primary and general election day although we may be registered. I’ll admit, our numbers have increased during the Presidential elections however; local elections (which have a direct impact) remain a great concern.
With the way that not only Brooklyn, but NYC overall continues to rapidly change, it is critically important that we show up to the polls this coming Election Day to exercise our right. Showing up at the polls is one part of it and showing up prepared is the other part. It may be safe to say that we know who the candidates are and may already know who we plan to personally vote for; understanding the entire ballot is of critical importance.
There are both City-wide and Borough-based offices that will be determined by this election, in addition to 6 State-wide ballot Proposals. It’s not too late to learn more information about any of this Election Days Ballot. You may want to also confirm your poll-site, election district and/or any election related information. The League of Women Voters is a wealth of information and actually have a telephone information service with live volunteers to answer any questions you may have.
