By  |  0 Comments

April marks National Financial Literacy Month. Defined by the National Financial Educators Council  financial literacy means : “Possessing the skills and knowledge on financial matters to confidently take effective action that best fulfills an individual’s personal, family and global community goals.”

The month also begins the second quarter of the year, ends the tax season and is the perfect time of year to do a financial check-up to set some goals. Whether you’re conducting a personal inventory or thinking about using your savvy to empower others, now is the time work toward financial goals with some intention.

Understanding and establishing a strong credit history is essential to financial security.  Starting a new business endeavor or monetizing a passion as a way of building wealth by generating an additional revenue source, offers great promise as well. Not only are there  start-up opportunities for minority and women owned businesses here in New York but has been a priority of President Obama’s administration overall. If you’re already a budding entrepreneur and want to expand and/or strengthen your business, there is no better time than now!

Throughout the month, there will be many free workshops and informational offerings to support healthy financial practices throughout the city. You’re employers’ pension and investment programs  may offer some seminars in terms of planning for your future as well.  If you haven’t already begun estate planning and/or created a Will; there is nothing stopping you from doing that now, or is there?

If we look at finances from a wellness perspective, the stress associated with debt and/or a lack of funds impacts not only quality of life, but physical health, mental health, job performance and relationships; particularly in communities of color and among women.  Educating children on finances early on also increases the likelihood that they will develop responsible financial habits as adults.  So you see, there are ways we all (no matter your age or current financial situation), can make strides toward a strong financial future.
